Stakeholder Management

Introduction

When working on a project, there are many people or organizations that are dependent on and/or are affected by the final product or output. These people are the stakeholders of a project.
Stakeholder management involves taking into consideration the different interests and values stakeholders have and addressing them during the duration of the project to ensure that all stakeholders are happy at the end.
This branch of management is important because it helps an organization to achieve its strategic objectives by involving both the external and internal environments and by creating a positive relationship with stakeholders through good management of their expectations.
Stakeholder management is also important because it helps identify positive existing relationships with stakeholders. These relationships can be converted to coalitions and partnerships, which go on to build trust and encourage collaboration among the stakeholders.

How Does Stakeholder Management Work?

Stakeholder management, in a business project sense, works through a strategy. This strategy is created using information gathered through the following processes:
  • Stakeholder Identification - It is first important to note all the stakeholders involved, whether internal or external. An ideal way to do this is by creating a stakeholder map.
  • Stakeholder Analysis - Through stakeholder analysis, it is the manager's job to identify a stakeholder's needs, interfaces, expectations, authority and common relationship.
  • Stakeholder Matrix - During this process, managers position stakeholders using information gathered during the stakeholder analysis process. Stakeholders are positioned according to their level of influence or enrichment they provide to the project.
  • Stakeholder Engagement - This is one of the most important processes of stakeholder management where all stakeholders engage with the manager to get to know each other and understand each other better, at an executive level.
This communication is important for it gives both the manager and stakeholder a chance to discuss and concur upon expectations and most importantly agree on a common set of Values and Principals, which all stakeholders will stand by.
  • Communicating Information - Here, expectations of communication are agreed upon and the manner in which communication is managed between the stakeholders is established, that is, how and when communication is received and who receives it.
  • Stakeholder Agreements - This is the Lexicon of the project or the objectives set forth. All key stakeholders sign this stakeholder agreement, which is a collection of all the agreed decisions.
In today's modern management project practice, managers and stakeholders favor an honest and transparent stakeholder relationship.

Failures in Stakeholder Management

Some organizations still endure poor stakeholder management practices and this arises because of:
  • Communicating with a stakeholder too late. This does not allow for ample revision of stakeholder expectations and hence their views may not be taken into consideration.
  • Inviting stakeholders to take part in the decision making process too early. This results in a complicated decision making process.
  • Involving the wrong stakeholders in a project. This results in a reduction in the value of their contribution and this leads to external criticism in the end.
  • The management does not value the contribution of stakeholders. Their participation is viewed as unimportant and inconsequential.
Whatever way stakeholder management is approached, it should be done attentively so as to achieve the best results.

Achieving Good Stakeholder Management

Insufficient involvement and ineffective communication with stakeholders can lead to project failure. The following are a few ideas that can be used to achieve good stakeholder management practices:
  • Management and stakeholders should work together to draw up a realistic list of goals and objectives. Engaging stakeholders will improve business performance and they take an active interest in the project.
  • Communication is the key. It is important for stakeholders and management to communicate throughout the course of the project on a regular basis. This ensures that both parties will be actively engaged and ensure smooth sailing during the course of the project.
  • Agreeing on deliverables is important. This makes sure there is no undue disappointment at the end. Prototypes and samples during the course of the project helps stakeholders have a clear understanding regarding the end project.

Conclusion

In conclusion, in order to achieve an outcome from the projects, good stakeholder management practices are required. Stakeholder management is the effective management of all participants in a project, be it external or internal contributors.
Arguably, the most important element in stakeholder management is communication where a manager has to spend his 99% time in doing meetings, checking and replying e-mails and updating and distributing reports, etc.

SC allows govt for OGDCL privatisation

OGDCL
The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the government to privatise Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL).

Hearing the OGDCL case, the apex court in an interim order directed that OGDCL shares be sold out to companies with higher bids. Notices in this regard have also been issued to the concerned parties by the court and the hearing of the case has been adjourned for three weeks.

In a concise statement submitted before the Supreme Court on Saturday, the federal government said if the privatisation of 10 per cent shares of the OGDCL was not completed, Pakistan would be exposed to ‘great financial loss’.

The government requested the top court to dismiss the petition of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government against the privatisation of OGDCL. “It would be an irretrievable loss which would affect future prospects of foreign investments,” said the statement by Additional Attorney General Waqar Rana.

The federal government has alleged that the K-P government is attempting to create the impression of a national economic crisis which simply doesn’t exist.

Since the PHC passed the restraining order, the value of OGDCL’s share has depreciated by about Rs 20, it added. “If this uncertainty continues, there is great likelihood that the share value will further depreciate. The loss already suffered on this account runs into 100s of millions of rupees.”

Imran, Qadri’s ‘pathetic protests’ result in sharp economic fall

Islamabad—The “pathetic protests” of Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri have resulted in crippling the government’s machinery, slacken ongoing projects, and caused a sharp fall in economy, the Gulf News has reported. The leading daily of United Arab Emirates in its article ‘Politics on containers’ says that everyone inside and outside of Pakistan has been watching the chaos pervading Islamabad, that has stagnated all projected plans. The article said Pakistan, a few weeks ago, was lucky enough to run on a democratic track and was on its road to progress. However, such development turned to standstill when Imran Khan and Tahir-ul-Qadri brought their agenda.

“It disrupted the current developments and created a chaotic situation, first in Lahore and then in Islamabad, starting with the independence day of Pakistan,” the writer says. “It is ridiculous when Imran says that he wants to create a new Pakistan, what type of new Pakistan is he thinking of?,” he adds. The protests having entered fifth week, have resulted in postponement of visits of three foreign presidents including the Chinese president. These visits were considered to be highly important for Pakistan to support its flagging economy and trade, the writer says. Moreover, calamity added up when the country faced heavy rains and flooding that just added to the existing havoc.

“This is the time when Imran and Qadri must stop such unlawful and unconstitutional protests and get down from their podiums to help the flood victims, that is if they are actually patriotic and loyal to the poor as they claim to be.” The writer said it was enough for the people who were sick of hearing the speeches of protesting leaders every day, and suggested that instead they should join hands with the government to work for a better Pakistan. Another article titled ‘Pakistan in ferment’ published in daily The Statesman by Arun Kumar Banerji said it is against a grim background that one has to examine the sit-in demonstration launched by Imran Khan, Qadri and their respective supporters. The writer says that a realistic assessment of the performance of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government over the last one year is not bereft of positive features. He mentions that since the present government took over, the stock market crossed the 30,000 mark; the rupee gained against the dollar; and after much delay, a military operation had been launched in North Waziristan.

“So not such a terrible record that the government needs to be changed four years before it’s tenure is up,” he adds. He said after all, the problems that Pakistan is facing now - sectarian clashes, terrorism, poverty - were not created by the present government nor can these be solved overnight. “So what is the larger agenda of Imran Khan and Qadri? They started their sit-ins with a one-point programme - resignation of the Prime Minister on charges of electoral fraud, though this claim is not supported by independent observers,” he said. The writer said had Imran Khan been serious about his allegations, he should have exhausted all legal avenues to unseat the Prime Minister before launching his undemocratic `movement’, which was criticised even by one of his senior party functionaries. Terming Imran Khan’s movement as “undemocratic”, he suggested that with 35 members of his party in the National Assembly, Imran should have sought the support of other Opposition parties.—APP

Admission lists for govt colleges announced

Karachi

The admission lists for humanities and commerce groups in the government-run colleges for men and women were issued on Saturday.

With the announcement of admissions in the humanities and commerce groups, the admission process for the academic year 2014-15 has been completed. The classes are likely to commence after October 13 at the government colleges of the city.

Owing to the adoption of Sindh E-Centralised College Admission Programme-2014 (SECCAP), the admission process at the colleges faced a lot of delay. Last year, the classes began from September 14, while this year the process of notifying admission lists was completed on September 27.

All admissions have been granted under the newly-adopted SECCAP-2014. As many as 18,853 male students have been given admissions in 57 colleges in commerce faculty, whereas a total of 13,711 females secured admissions in 53 government colleges. In humanities faculty, 7,300 female students got admissions in 64 colleges, while 933 male students secured admissions in 35 colleges of the city.
